Blind-folded LegolympicsEvery year on August 13th, athletes converge on the North Fork Polygon for the annual blind-folded Lego build-off. In the dual-slalom division (shown below), competitors face-off on either side of a bucket full of randomly selected Lego pieces. Each contender has exactly 3 minutes to complete a Lego creation using only their sense of touch and/or smell.
The first new moon in June is the traditional time of year when legolympians begin seriously training for this mid-summer event. Training techniques include: petting animals with your eyes closed, memorizing the alphabet backwards, and going several days without watching television. Shown below are the 2005 and 2006 winning models. Choosing the best blind-folded lego creation isn't easy, given the criteria for judging: 1) variety of colors; 2) balance and symmetry; 3) ethereal design; 4) number of pieces used, and 5) resemblance of a weapon. 2006 LegolympicsThis year's celebrity judge was the CEO and Webmaster of Working Stiff Comics, creator of the Negotiator and Zuto the Mighty, and 2nd-place winner of iFilm's 2006 dance video contest.
Contestant Steven won top honors by building a Lego creation that did not re-use any of the same color pieces, which is especially difficult when blind-folded. Austin and Benton built what appeared to be semi-symmetrical space weapons. Max snapped together a record 28 pieces without looking. Clinton, Taylor, and Holden tied in the ethereal category. Also, three teeth were lost by competitors durring and/or after the event. 2005 Legolympics
